Following consultation with breeding members and the Norwegian Forest Cat Breed Advisory Committee, the NFCC committee has ratified an updated Breeding Policy for 2026. The revised policy takes effect for all litters registered from 1 May 2026 onwards.
What Has Changed
The main updates concern three areas: mandatory health screening before breeding, a clearer pathway for approved outcrosses to unrelated Norwegian lines, and stricter transparency around kitten placements.
Health testing
All breeding cats must now have a current negative HCM scan (valid for 12 months), a PK-Def DNA test, and a GSD-IV DNA test before being bred from. Results should be uploaded to the Members’ Area before the first mating. This brings NFCC policy fully in line with current BAC recommendations.
Outcrossing
The policy now includes a formal process for members wishing to outcross to registered Norwegians outside the usual UK pool. Applications are reviewed by a subcommittee of three, and decisions are published in the members’ newsletter.
Transparency
Breeding members are asked to publish a list of available kittens through the club website (via the Available Kittens page), and to provide new owners with a written kitten pack that includes pedigree, health records, and the NFCC new-owner welcome guide.
Where to Read the Full Policy
The full updated policy document is available in the Members’ Area. Printed copies will be distributed at the AGM in June. Any questions should be addressed to the club secretary via the Contact page.
